Black Tern

Chlidonias niger

The Black Tern is a small, graceful bird with a black head, back, and wings, and a white underbody. During the breeding season, it displays a distinctive black cap and a slender, slightly drooping black bill. This species is known for its buoyant, erratic flight and its habit of hovering over water while foraging for small fish and insects. Black Terns breed in freshwater marshes and wetlands, often nesting on floating vegetation. They migrate to coastal areas and estuaries during the non-breeding season. This species is highly social, often forming large flocks during migration. Black Terns are known for their distinctive, high-pitched calls.
