Black Wheatear

Oenanthe leucura

The Black Wheatear (Oenanthe leucura) is a small passerine bird found in rocky and arid habitats of southern Europe and northwestern Africa. It is characterized by its black plumage with white patches on the wings and tail. This species is known for its distinctive habit of perching on prominent rocks or walls while scanning the ground for insect prey. Black Wheatears are territorial and often seen in pairs during the breeding season. Their melodious song can be heard as they defend their nesting sites. Despite facing threats from habitat degradation and human disturbance, the Black Wheatear population is currently stable.
