Chilean Woodstar

Eulidia yarrellii (Bourcier, 1847)

Chilean Woodstar, Eulidia yarrellii, is a hummingbird of southern Peru and northern Chile, in the Apodiformes and Trochilidae. It is the only member of its genus and is the smallest bird in Chile. The species has a short black bill, and the adult male shows iridescent olive green upperparts with white underparts, plus a reddish-purple and blue gorget that can look dark. The female is olive green above and very pale buff below. It lives in scrub, thickets and gardens along river valleys in the arid Arica area.
