Common Goldeneye

Bucephala clangula

The Common Goldeneye is a medium-sized diving duck found in North America and northern Europe. Males have striking black-and-white plumage with a greenish-black head and a round white patch on the face. Females are brown with a reddish-brown head. These ducks are known for their rapid wingbeats and distinctive whistling sound during flight. They breed in wooded lakes and ponds, where they nest in tree cavities. During the winter, they can be found in coastal bays and estuaries. Common Goldeneyes primarily feed on aquatic invertebrates and small fish. Their populations are generally stable, but they face threats from habitat loss and pollution.
