Explore Shirvan National Park with Elchin Sultanov, Director of the Azerbaijan Ornithological Society and an ornithologist with four decades of professional experience and 25 years of birdwatching guiding experience.
Shirvan is one of Azerbaijan’s most accessible major birding areas, approximately 90 kilometres south of Baku on the Caspian migration route. Its 54,000 hectares combine open semi-desert, shallow lakes and wetland habitats used by breeding, migrating and wintering birds. More than 270 bird species have been recorded, and the park is also famous for its large population of goitered gazelles.
The birding changes markedly through the year. Winter can bring large Little Bustard flocks and concentrations of waterbirds; spring highlights breeding species; and autumn can produce raptors, passerines, ducks and waders.
