Pluvialis apricaria
The European Golden Plover is a medium-sized wader bird with striking golden and black plumage. During the breeding season, males develop a stunning black belly and face, while females have more subdued colors. These birds are known for their distinctive plaintive whistle calls. They breed in open moorland and tundra habitats in northern Europe and Asia, and migrate to coastal areas and wetlands in southern Europe and Africa during the winter. European Golden Plovers are primarily insectivorous, foraging for insects, worms, and other invertebrates in their habitat. Although their population is currently stable, they face threats from habitat loss and climate change.
