Himalayan Monal

Lophophorus impejanus (Latham, 1790)

Himalayan Monal, Lophophorus impejanus, is a pheasant of the Himalayas in the Oriental Region, breeding in mountain forests, shrublands, grassy slopes, cliffs and alpine meadows. It was described by Latham in 1790. The male is strikingly marked, with a metallic green crest, coppery upperparts and a white rump that shows well in flight. Females and young birds are more subdued, with white on the throat and tail patterning. The species ranges from Afghanistan and Pakistan through Nepal, India, southern Tibet and Bhutan, and it descends lower in winter.
