This private three-day programme uses Chopta as the base for exploring a compact but varied section of the Western Himalaya with local guide Dinesh Negi. The route links the forests and open slopes near Chopta and Duggalbitta, the rising Tungnath trail, and lower country around Mandal and Makkumath.
Changes in altitude bring different bird communities into reach. Oak and rhododendron woodland, mountain meadows, village edges and mixed forest can support pheasants, barbets, sunbirds, flycatchers, laughingthrushes and raptors. Himalayan Monal and Koklass Pheasant are important goals, while Himalayan Vulture, Great Barbet and Red-billed Blue Magpie represent other established possibilities.
Field time begins early when practical. Start in the cool morning around Chopta and Duggalbitta, moving between woodland margins, open slopes and quieter stretches of road. Dinesh chooses the most useful elevations for current activity, with pheasants, sunbirds, flycatchers and mixed forest flocks among the possibilities.
Follow the Tungnath route through rhododendron forest toward higher mountain habitat, with the distance adapted to access, weather and the group. This change in elevation creates opportunities to search for Himalayan Monal, Koklass Pheasant, Himalayan Vulture and other upland birds without treating any sighting as certain.
Shift to the lower-elevation woods and cultivated edges around Mandal and Makkumath. The contrasting habitat can add barbets, minivets, laughingthrushes, woodpeckers and further Western Himalayan species before the three-day programme concludes.
