Koklass Pheasant

Pucrasia macrolopha (Lesson, RP, 1829)

Phasianidae — Pheasants & Allies

Koklass Pheasant, Pucrasia macrolopha, is a pheasant of the Himalayas through to south China, where it inhabits high-altitude forest. It is the only member of Pucrasia. The bird is known for its territorial call, which has given rise to both its common and scientific names. It stays below the tree line and is usually hard to see because it keeps low under cover. Males and females differ in plumage, and both have long tails with pale tips. It lives in pairs or small family groups, nests on the ground, and roosts in trees or beneath rock ledges.
