Hoatzin

Opisthocomus hoazin

The Hoatzin, also known as the stinkbird or Canje pheasant, is a unique species of bird found in the Amazon and Orinoco basins of South America. It is known for its distinctive appearance, with a blue face, maroon eyes, and spiky crest. Juveniles have claws on their wings, a feature that is rare in modern birds. Hoatzins are herbivorous, feeding on leaves and fruits, and their digestive system produces a foul odor, giving them the nickname 'stinkbird'. They are social birds, often found in noisy groups along riverbanks and swamps. The hoatzin's population is currently stable, but its habitat is threatened by deforestation and habitat loss.
