Manu Road Birding Tour - 3 Days
A three-day introduction to Manu Road, descending from the high Andes through cloud forest to the tropical lowlands around Pillcopata. Early starts and changing elevation support a broad bird list, with a full second day for lagoons, gardens and bamboo.
About this tour
This express Manu Road itinerary uses two nights in Pillcopata to cover a large elevation range without the length of the classic route. The first day follows the descent from Acjanaco, the second concentrates on lowland habitats, and the third returns to Cusco with time for stops en route.
Machuwasi Lagoon brings chances for Hoatzin and Horned Screamer. Pico de Hoz and Inkamazonia add hummingbird gardens, while Guadua bamboo supports a different specialist community. Cock-of-the-rock is also included in the stated target list.
Expect pre-dawn departures, long road transfers and repeated observation stops from roughly 3,600 metres down to about 500 metres. The pace is moderate to active and sightings depend on current conditions.

Itinerary
Day 1
Cusco to Pillcopata
Depart Cusco at 4:30 am and pause in Paucartambo to buy any needed water, fruit or snacks. Continue to the Acjanaco checkpoint at the entrance to Manu National Park, then bird downhill through a succession of high-Andean, elfin-forest, cloud-forest and tropical habitats. The route drops from around 3,600 metres to approximately 500 metres before reaching Pillcopata for the night.
Day 2
Machuwasi Lagoon, Hummingbird Gardens and Bamboo
At 6:00 am, visit Machuwasi Lagoon to look for Hoatzin, Horned Screamer and other wetland birds. Continue to Pico de Hoz for hummingbirds and forest species. Around midday, move to Inkamazonia, combine a local lunch with garden birding, and then explore Guadua bamboo for habitat specialists.
Day 3
Return to Cusco
After breakfast, begin the drive back to Cusco. Use selected stops along the ascending route for further birding and pause briefly for lunch. Arrival in Cusco is planned for around 6:00 pm.
