Lesser Yellowlegs

Tringa flavipes

The Lesser Yellowlegs is a medium-sized shorebird with long, bright yellow legs and a slightly upturned bill. During the breeding season, it has a distinctive black and white barred pattern on its back and wings. This species is known for its distinctive, melodious call that is often heard in its breeding grounds in the boreal forests of North America. Lesser Yellowlegs are migratory birds, wintering in coastal areas of southern United States, Central America, and northern South America. They forage in shallow water or mudflats, using their long bills to probe for small invertebrates. Although their population is considered stable, they face threats from habitat loss and degradation.
