Ichthyaetus melanocephalus
The Mediterranean Gull, scientifically known as Ichthyaetus melanocephalus, is a medium-sized gull with a distinctive appearance. During the breeding season, it displays a white body, black head, and striking red beak and legs. Outside the breeding season, the black head turns white, and the red beak fades. This gull is known for its graceful flight and its melodic calls. It breeds in coastal areas and islands, often in colonies, and feeds on fish, insects, and scavenged food. Its populations are mainly found in the Mediterranean region, but it also occurs in parts of Western Europe and the Black Sea. The Mediterranean Gull is known for its adaptability and is often seen in urban areas, foraging in garbage dumps and coastal towns.
