Purple Martin

Purple Martin, Progne subis, is a swallow in the family Hirundinidae that breeds across North America and Middle America and spends the nonbreeding season in eastern South America. It is the largest swallow in North America. Although its name suggests otherwise, it is not truly purple. Its plumage is dark and glossy, with an iridescent look that can seem blue, navy, deep purple or even green depending on the light. It is a migratory bird, and its flight is noted for speed, agility and a mix of flapping and gliding.
