Santa Marta Parakeet

Pyrrhura viridicata Todd, 1913

Santa Marta Parakeet, Pyrrhura viridicata, is a parrot of the Psittacidae family that breeds in northern Colombia. It is confined to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, where it lives on the north and north-western slopes. Its home is mainly humid forest at middle to high elevations, and it also turns up in secondary growth and cultivated land. The species was described by Todd in 1913. It is a monotypic bird with an uncertain position within Pyrrhura. In the wild it nests in dead wax palms, and it also uses nest boxes placed near forest.
