Spotted Towhee

Pipilo maculatus

The Spotted Towhee is a medium-sized, ground-dwelling bird found in western North America. It is known for its bold black and white plumage, with red eyes and white spots on its wings and back. This bird forages on the ground for insects, seeds, and berries, often using a distinctive scratching motion with its feet. It prefers dense shrubby habitats, such as chaparral, thickets, and forest edges. The Spotted Towhee is known for its loud and distinctive call, often described as a metallic 'chink' or 'mew' sound. While not currently considered threatened, loss of habitat due to urbanization and agriculture may pose future challenges for this species.
