Three-toed woodpecker

Picoides tridactylus

The Three-toed woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker found in coniferous forests of North America and Eurasia. It is known for its distinctive three-toed feet, unlike most woodpeckers which have four toes. This species primarily feeds on insects and larvae found under the bark of trees, using its chisel-like bill to excavate. The Three-toed woodpecker is often solitary and can be identified by its drumming sound, which is slower and more irregular than that of other woodpeckers. Due to habitat loss and forestry practices, this species faces some conservation concerns in certain regions.
