About this tour

Link the island forests of Hainan with Nonggang’s limestone country and the mountain habitats of western and northern Yunnan. This 17-day route begins in Sanya, crosses Guangxi and the Gaoligong Mountains, and finishes around Lijiang.

Each stage has a different regional focus: Hainan Partridge and Hainan Peacock-Pheasant at Jianfengling; Nonggang Babbler and other karst specialists in Guangxi; pittas, scimitar babblers and laughingthrushes around Yingjiang; hide birding at Baihualing; and Yunnan Nuthatch and highland forest birds near Lijiang. White-headed Langur is also sought during the transfer to Nonggang. Wildlife observations remain conditional on the day’s conditions.

The published route runs from December 28 to January 13 and accommodates up to eight guests. Its displayed starting price is USD 4,600 per adult. The operator currently marks the 2026 and 2027 departures as full, so later availability must be confirmed through an inquiry. Meals, accommodation, local transport, guiding, reserve and hide fees, plus refreshments are included; arrival/departure flights, alcohol, insurance and gratuities are separate.

Meals: B L D

Meet the local guide after arrival in Sanya and transfer to Jianfengling National Forest Park. Spend the night in the park guesthouse.

First Jianfengling hide and forest session
Meals: B L D

Use the hides and forest trails at Jianfengling for Hainan Peacock-Pheasant, Hainan Partridge, Ratchet-tailed Treepie, Chinese Barbet, Yellow-billed Nuthatch, Hainan Leaf Warbler and the Hainan form of Swinhoe’s Laughingthrush. The island forms of Plain Flowerpecker, Fork-tailed Sunbird, White-winged Magpie, Pale Blue Flycatcher, Chinese Bulbul and Silver Pheasant broaden the search alongside Rufous-cheeked Laughingthrush.

Day 3
Second day with Hainan endemics
Meals: B L D

Travel back to Sanya, fly to Nanning in Guangxi and continue by road to Nonggang. The transfer includes an attempt to see White-headed Langur.

Day 5
First Nonggang karst-forest day

Buff-breasted Babbler and Streaked Wren-Babbler join David’s Fulvetta, Pale-footed Bush Warbler, Limestone Leaf Warbler, Black-throated Laughingthrush, White-winged Magpie, Indochinese Green-Magpie and Blue-rumped Pitta on the wider search list.

Meals: B L D

Return to Nanning for the air journey toward Tengchong, transferring via Kunming. Overnight in Tengchong.

Day 8
Yingjiang and Hornbill Valley introduction

Collared and Burmese Mynas and Collared Treepie share the route with several laughingthrushes and scimitar babblers, Rufous-headed Parrotbill, White-hooded Babbler, Rusty-naped and Blue-naped Pittas, White-cheeked Partridge and Grey Peacock-Pheasant.

Day 9
Western Yunnan forest specialties
Meals: B L D

Continue through the same western Yunnan network, watching for Kalij Pheasant, Common Green-Magpie and Naung Mung Scimitar Babbler. Drongos, sunbirds, barbets, sibias, forktails, flycatchers and Dark-sided, Long-billed and Himalayan Thrushes add variety.

Day 10
Flexible Yingjiang-region circuit
