A private ten-day Cuba birding route through Soroa, La Güira, Zapata Swamp, La Belén and the northern cays.
About this tour
This ten-day private journey connects several of Cuba’s most distinctive birding regions. The route begins west of Havana in Soroa and La Güira, where forest trails and limestone landscapes provide opportunities to search for Cuban Trogon, Cuban Tody, Cuban Grassquit, Cuban Pygmy-Owl and other island specialties.
Four days are devoted to the varied habitats of the Zapata region. Forest, savanna, mangrove and wetland sites around Bermejas, Soplillar, Las Salinas and Palpite are selected according to current conditions. Possible highlights include Bee Hummingbird, Zapata Wren, Zapata Sparrow, Blue-headed and Gray-fronted Quail-Doves, Cuban Parrot and Bare-legged Owl.
The route then continues east to Sierra de Najasa and La Belén for species with restricted ranges, including Giant Kingbird and Palm Crow, before visiting Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo for coastal birds and regional specialties. Early starts and several substantial road transfers are part of the program. Accommodation is in locally selected lodging and the final sequence can be adjusted for access, weather and bird activity.

Itinerary
Day 1
Soroa forests and trails
Travel from Havana to Soroa and bird forest trails and the orchid-garden area. The day focuses on western Cuban endemics and woodland birds.
Day 2
La Güira National Park
Explore La Güira and Cueva de los Portales, combining wooded trails, limestone scenery and searches for Cuban Solitaire and other regional birds.
Day 3
Transfer to Zapata
Travel toward Zapata with birding stops, then begin exploring forest sites around Bermejas or Soplillar as conditions allow.
Day 4
Zapata forest birding
Search productive forest and edge habitats for endemic birds, including quail-doves, owls, Cuban Tody and Bee Hummingbird.
Day 5
Las Salinas wetlands
Follow the reserve road through savanna, mangroves and wetland habitat for waterbirds, raptors and coastal species.
Day 6
Palpite and Zapata specialties
Continue in the Zapata region, selecting sites for forest specialties and birds associated with the peninsula’s marsh and woodland mosaic.
Day 7
Sierra de Najasa and La Belén
Travel east to the protected landscapes around La Belén and begin searching for Giant Kingbird, Palm Crow and other localized species.
Day 8
La Belén birding
Spend another field day in lowland woodland and open habitats, with the route adapted to the strongest current bird activity.
Day 9
Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo
Visit northern-cay habitats for shorebirds, flamingos, Cuban Gnatcatcher, Oriente Warbler and other regional specialties.
Day 10
Return to Havana
Make the long return transfer to Havana, with the exact schedule and any feasible stops confirmed before departure.
