5-Day Sungai Wain Private Birding Tour
Five days of private birding in Sungai Wain’s lowland forest and Balikpapan Bay, seeking Bornean endemics from forest trails and a mangrove boat trip.
About this tour
This five-day private journey concentrates on the lowland habitats of Sungai Wain Protected Forest, north of Balikpapan in East Kalimantan. Its marsh, dipterocarp and riverine forest support a notable mix of Bornean endemics and other rainforest birds.
Three nights near the reserve allow repeated morning and full-day sessions on forest trails. The search may include Bornean Peacock-Pheasant, Bornean Ground-Cuckoo, Bornean Bristlehead, Blue-headed Pitta, Bornean Wren-Babbler, Grey-breasted Babbler and Malaysian Honeyguide. These are wild birds, so sightings depend on conditions and cannot be guaranteed.
On the fourth day, forest birding is followed by a motorized-boat excursion in Balikpapan Bay. Mangrove habitat adds a different setting for birds as well as possible proboscis monkeys and long-tailed macaques. The trip finishes in Balikpapan after one hotel night, with an airport transfer on Day 5.

Itinerary ▼
Meet at Balikpapan airport and transfer north to the Sungai Wain homestay. Begin birding on forest trails, focusing on Bornean endemics and lowland specialties before returning for the night.
Start early for a full day in the protected forest. Work through suitable trail sections for pheasants, pittas, babblers, bristleheads, woodpeckers, hornbills and flycatchers, with meals and a second homestay night.
Return to the forest for another full day, allowing time to revisit productive areas and seek species missed earlier. Overnight again at the homestay.
Bird the forest in the morning, then travel by motorized boat through Balikpapan Bay. Explore mangrove habitat for birds and possible primates before continuing to a Balikpapan hotel.
After breakfast, remain at leisure until the scheduled transfer to Balikpapan airport for the onward flight.
