About this tour

Dakatcha Woodlands covers almost 2,000 square kilometers of rolling country in Kilifi County’s Magarini area. Its coastal mosaic includes Brachystegia woodland on poor soils, dense forest and thicket, dry scrub and grassland, with the Galana–Sabaki River forming the southern boundary.

Kilifi Weaver, formerly known as Clarke’s Weaver, is the defining bird. Dakatcha is its only known site outside Arabuko–Sokoke Forest, and breeding here was confirmed in 2013. Sokoke Pipit and Sokoke Scops Owl are further coastal specialties, while Lesser Blue-eared Starling has also been photographed in the woodlands. Every target remains dependent on season and field conditions.

The area has been recognized as both a Key Biodiversity Area and part of a global biodiversity hotspot, yet it has no formal protection status. Local conservation work links habitat protection with beekeeping, woodlots and community guiding. Birding moves among woodland, thicket and more open patches, with the exact route selected around access, weather and recent activity.
