About this tour

A morning around Boquete offers a compact introduction to the eastern slopes of Volcan Baru. Jason Lara leads this private outing through local river valleys and trails, choosing two or three observation stops to suit the birds you hope to find. The town sits at about 1,100 meters, within a highland landscape of forest, flowing water, gardens and agricultural land. The outing begins around 7 am and normally finishes near 11:30 am, leaving the afternoon free for other plans.

The emphasis is on finding productive places and taking time to watch. Hummingbirds, tanagers, euphonias, flycatchers, thrushes and trogons are among the bird families associated with these highlands. Resplendent Quetzal and Costa Rican Pygmy Owl are less frequent possibilities. Three-wattled Bellbird is a seasonal prospect, with the operator identifying February through June as its highland breeding period. Particular species cannot be assured, and the precise stops depend on your interests and field conditions.

Jason speaks English and Spanish and supplies a spotting scope. Visitors may bring binoculars, a camera and a field guide. Comfortable walking shoes, long pants and rain protection are useful for the area's mist and showers. A picnic can be arranged as a stop if you bring your own food; the usual morning program ends before lunch. Additional walking or sightseeing can be discussed when arranging the outing.

Transport from your accommodation or another agreed location in Boquete, entrance charges and one bottle of water for each person are included. Pickups from Caldera, David or Los Molinos carry an additional charge. Private groups are limited to eight, with the vehicle chosen for the group size. The cost is quoted for your party and requested route. Send an inquiry through BirdWatch to discuss a date, bird interests and practical arrangements.
