Cerro Punta and Volcan Private Highland Birding with Jason Lara
Travel from Boquete around Volcan Baru to Volcan and Cerro Punta for a full day among highland forests, river valleys, gardens and agricultural landscapes.
About this tour
Cross to the western side of Volcan Baru for a full day in the Chiriqui highlands with Jason Lara. Leaving Boquete at about 5:30 am allows for roughly ninety minutes of driving toward Volcan and Cerro Punta. Cerro Punta lies at around 2,000 meters, higher than Boquete, and its cultivated valleys bring flower gardens, vegetable fields and coffee-growing landscapes into the wider mountain setting.
The route normally uses two or three birding stops. Cloud forest and rainforest occur within this varied highland region, where flat ground and steeper terrain offer different conditions for observation. Jason adapts the outing to the group's interests rather than following a fixed checklist. The highland bird community includes hummingbirds, woodcreepers, warblers, tanagers, euphonias and trogons, along with raptors. Quetzals and Costa Rican Pygmy Owls are among the rarer birds that may be encountered. Three-wattled Bellbird is a seasonal possibility during the February–June breeding period described by the operator.
This excursion lasts substantially longer than the Boquete morning option. Return to Boquete is generally between 5 and 6 pm, and productive bird activity in the early evening can extend the day. Lunch is extra: bring a picnic or arrange a restaurant stop with the guide. There is no overnight stay in the standard program.
Jason guides in Spanish and English and brings a spotting scope. Pack your own binoculars or camera, walking shoes, snacks and a rain jacket for mist or showers. Transport from Boquete, admission charges and drinking water for each guest form part of the quoted price. Pickup outside Boquete can be arranged at additional cost. Up to eight people can join the private group. Use the BirdWatch inquiry form to plan the date, preferred birding emphasis and lunch arrangements.
