Panama Birding Journey from Darién to Chiriquí
A tailor-made 15-day journey through Panama City forests, the Darién lowlands, Coiba and the Chiriquí highlands, with dedicated searches for Harpy Eagle and Resplendent Quetzal.
About this tour
Travel across Panama on a private itinerary that connects several of the country’s contrasting bird habitats. The journey begins in the tropical forest within and beside Panama City, including Metropolitan Natural Park and the celebrated Pipeline Road in Soberanía National Park.
The route then moves east into Darién for three days and two nights. Guided outings begin around Metetí and continue toward the community of Pijibasal, where local residents support conservation around an active Harpy Eagle nesting area. Access combines private road travel, a traditional boat journey and a guided walk, with observation handled quietly and according to current conditions.
After returning to Panama City, the program crosses to Santa Catalina and Coiba National Park before continuing into the Chiriquí highlands. Birding around Río Cristal and La Amistad reaches cloud-forest habitat where Resplendent Quetzal, hummingbirds, tanagers and warblers may be found in season. Additional days around Boquete can include easy forest paths, more demanding waterfall trails, wildlife walks and local nature experiences.
This published route is an itinerary idea rather than a fixed departure. Terra Panama adapts the program, accommodation and practical arrangements to the travelers’ dates, interests and pace. Current price, availability, guide language, group size and final inclusions are confirmed after inquiry.

Day 5
Community-guided Harpy Eagle search
Start before dawn and travel toward Yaviza, then continue by traditional boat and on foot with local community members toward an active Harpy Eagle nesting area. Observation is discreet and depends on safe access and current conditions. Return toward Metetí with further birding opportunities along the route.

More experienced birders can add an early exploration of the El Salto de Chucunaque trail. Continue back through the Darién landscape and reach Panama City during the afternoon.
