About this tour

Follow the eastern slope of the Andes from Cusco into the Manu Biosphere Reserve on a private journey designed around both birds and butterflies. The route crosses high Andean wetlands, upper and lower cloud forest, the Cultural Zone and lowland rainforest beside the Alto Madre de Dios River, creating a broad altitudinal range and a changing set of habitats.

Field time includes Huacarpay Lake, the Manu Road, a Cock-of-the-rock display site, forest trails around San Pedro and Pantiacolla lodges, river travel and the gardens and oxbow-lake habitat near Amazonia Lodge. Pantiacolla reports more than 600 bird species around its lodge area. Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Blue-headed Macaw, Blue-and-yellow Macaw and many tanagers, hummingbirds, antbirds and manakins are among the supported possibilities, while butterflies can include morphos, glasswings, daggerwings, sulphurs and skippers.

The standard program lasts eight days and uses a bilingual bird-and-butterfly guide. Road and boat journeys are substantial, accommodation is rustic but comfortable, and rainforest walks can be hot, humid and muddy. The itinerary remains flexible because weather, river level, access and wildlife activity can alter daily plans. Every animal sighting is conditional.

Itinerary

Day 1
Cusco, Huacarpay and Manu cloud forest
Posada San Pedro Lodge

Leave Cusco early, bird Huacarpay Lake and cross the Andes through Paucartambo and Ajanaco Pass. Descend the Manu Road through changing cloud-forest elevations before reaching San Pedro for the first of two nights.

Day 2
Upper and lower cloud-forest birding
Posada San Pedro Lodge

Explore several elevations along the Manu Road for mixed flocks, toucans, parrots, tanagers and cloud-forest specialties, with parallel attention to butterflies at forest edges, seepages and streams.

Day 3
Cock-of-the-rock lek and lodge forest
Posada San Pedro Lodge

Concentrate on the transition forest near the lodge and visit a Cock-of-the-rock display site. Continue through hummingbird and tanager habitat while watching for butterflies gathering along damp ground and small waterfalls.

Day 4
San Pedro to Pantiacolla Lodge
Pantiacolla Lodge

Bird the productive 1,000–1,500 metre zone during the descent to Atalaya, then continue by river toward Pantiacolla Lodge. Stops are selected for bird activity, butterflies and current travel conditions.

Day 5
Pantiacolla forest trails
Pantiacolla Lodge

Walk the lodge trail system across several foothill habitats for tinamous, antbirds, manakins and mixed-species flocks. Garden observation provides a quieter alternative during the middle of the day.

Day 6
Second full day at Pantiacolla
Pantiacolla Lodge

Continue exploring the trail network and river-edge habitats. Guests who are comfortable with a more demanding walk can attempt the climb to a viewpoint above the Amazonian foothills.

Day 7
River journey to Amazonia Lodge
Amazonia Lodge

Travel upriver and walk the approximately two-kilometre Jeep Trail while luggage is transferred. Bird the lodge garden and nearby oxbow-lake habitat for hummingbirds, potoos and wetland species.

Day 8
Final birding and return to Cusco
Cusco

Take a final morning walk, cross the river and return to Cusco by road. The long drive includes practical breaks and opportunistic birding stops where time and conditions allow.

Policies & FAQ

Are the highlighted birds guaranteed?

No. The route covers suitable habitats with a specialist guide, but weather, access and wildlife movement determine every sighting.

How demanding is the journey?

Expect early starts, long road and boat transfers, humid forest conditions and regular trail walking. The lookout climb at Pantiacolla is optional and more demanding.

Can the journey continue into Manu's Reserved Zone?

Pantiacolla offers an optional extension that joins a broader nature group. Its Reserved Zone guide is not necessarily a bird specialist, so the extension is confirmed separately.
