About this tour

Ria Formosa is a shifting coastal lagoon of saltmarsh, tidal channels, islands and working shellfish grounds. This approximately two-hour excursion leaves Doca de Faro on a comfortable pontoon boat, giving a small group an open view of habitats that are difficult to read from shore. A local nature guide provides live interpretation while the skipper keeps the route compatible with tide, weather and safety.

The boat moves slowly past oyster and clam farms and toward the islands, where the lagoon approaches the sea. A planned stop of about 15–20 minutes on a deserted beach breaks up the cruise before the return to Faro. The programme works for an experienced birder or a first wildlife outing; binoculars are supplied, and no prior birdwatching knowledge is required.

Season and tide continually change the mix. Waders are especially prominent in winter, while Little Tern and Kentish Plover are connected with the breeding area nearer the lagoon mouth. Other possibilities range from Eurasian Spoonbill, Little Egret and White Stork to Black-tailed Godwit, Whimbrel, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Grey Plover, Sandwich Tern and Greater Flamingo. Every bird remains wild, so neither a species list nor a close view can be guaranteed.

The starting price is EUR 40, with bookings for two to eleven guests. The guided boat trip, binoculars, life vests, commentary and beach stop are included. Hotel pickup, travel to the marina, food, drinks and optional tips are excluded. Commentary may be available in English, Portuguese, French or Spanish.

Departures remain subject to suitable weather, tides and the skipper’s safety decision, which can alter the route or duration. If the operator cancels for poor weather, guests can choose another date or a full refund. Formosamar also confirmed a full refund when the guest cancels at least 24 hours before the scheduled event; all other terms are supplied before booking.
