Eight-Day Malá Fatra Ornithology and Nature Week

About this tour

This dedicated early-summer departure places ornithology at the centre of an eight-day nature week in Slovakia’s Malá Fatra National Park. From the base in Štefanová, local guide Vlado Trulik draws on decades of field knowledge to choose six walks around current weather, bird activity and the group’s condition. The entire tour and all guiding are in German.

Flower-rich meadows, old forest, mountain streams, limestone formations, cliffs and open ridges create opportunities for a broad Western Carpathian bird community. The search may encompass eagles and other raptors, forest owls, grouse, woodpeckers, flycatchers, Corn Crake, Black Stork and White-throated Dipper. Tracks of wolf, lynx or brown bear can add context to the landscape, but neither birds nor large mammals are guaranteed.

There are six guided field days between arrival and departure. Some routes may reach approximately 15 kilometres with 200–800 metres of ascent and descent, always adapted to participant fitness and conditions. Observation and identification pauses are built into the walks. When weather closes the mountain options, illustrated natural-history talks or appropriate cultural alternatives can replace a field route.

The group stays seven nights in double rooms with private bathrooms at Pension Muráň in the Vrátna Valley. Seven days of full board include generous breakfasts, provisions or open-air lunches during excursions, regional Slovak evening meals and the programme’s stated tastings. Bar drinks are excluded. The current price is EUR 1,100 per person, with a EUR 160 weekly single-room supplement.

The fixed departure is 29 May–5 June 2027 for 10–15 participants, and the current official schedule shows only two places remaining. Travel to Slovakia, entrance fees, an optional cable-car journey, bar drinks and local vehicle transfers are outside the base price. On roughly three days, route starts can require 5–20-kilometre local transfers arranged through participant and guide car-sharing; if no suitable drivers are available, extra transport may need to be hired at the group’s expense.

Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in the Vrátna Valley
Štefanová and Vrátna Valley

Arrive independently in Štefanová on Saturday afternoon, ideally between 14:00 and 17:00. Settle into Pension Muráň, meet Vlado and the other participants, then join the shared dinner and German-language introduction to the habitats, walking programme and practical arrangements.

Day 2
First guided search across local habitats
Malá Fatra National Park

Begin the first of six natural-history walks from the national-park base. Vlado chooses a route suited to weather, group fitness and current bird activity, using frequent stops to scan, listen and interpret meadow, forest, stream or rocky habitat. Full-board field provisions are included.

Day 3
Forest birds and old Carpathian woodland
Malá Fatra National Park

Work a suitable section of Malá Fatra forest for woodpeckers, owls, flycatchers and other woodland birds, while reading tracks and signs from the wider ecosystem. The exact distance and elevation reflect trail conditions and the group’s ability.

Day 4
Open slopes, ridges and raptor country
Malá Fatra National Park

Use safe viewpoints, mountain meadows or open slopes for raptors and other early-summer birds. Golden and Lesser Spotted Eagles are possibilities rather than promises; plants and broader landscape interpretation remain part of the excursion.

Day 5
Streams, cliffs and mixed mountain habitat
Malá Fatra National Park

Combine accessible watercourses, rocky ground and adjoining vegetation as conditions permit. The search can include White-throated Dipper, Black Stork, Corn Crake or other seasonal birds, with a field picnic and regular observation breaks.

Day 6
Current priorities and wildlife signs
Malá Fatra National Park

Let the week’s observations shape another flexible walk. Vlado may revisit productive habitat or choose a different elevation for grouse, owls, woodpeckers and flycatchers, while also examining signs of wolf, lynx or brown bear without promising a mammal sighting.

Day 7
Final guided excursion or weather alternative
Štefanová and Vrátna Valley

Use the sixth guided field day for remaining bird and nature priorities at a pace suitable for the group. If poor weather prevents useful walking, the supported alternatives can include illustrated natural-history talks or a cultural visit selected for current conditions.

Day 8
Breakfast and independent departure
Štefanová and Vrátna Valley

Check out after breakfast and depart independently. Travel away from Štefanová, including any transfer toward Žilina, is outside the base package and is coordinated separately with the group’s onward plans.
