White-backed Woodpecker

Dendrocopos leucotos

The White-backed Woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker found in mature coniferous and mixed forests of Europe and Asia. It has a distinct black and white plumage with a white back and black wings. This species is known for its drumming, a rapid series of taps on a resonant surface, used for communication and territory establishment. The White-backed Woodpecker forages for insects and larvae by excavating cavities in trees. It is a shy and elusive bird, often heard before it is seen. Due to habitat loss and degradation, this species is considered near threatened in some regions.
