About this tour

Travel through northern Spain with Duncan Gough on a private one-week journey centred on five resident Iberian eagles: Spanish Imperial, Golden, Bonelli’s, Booted and Short-toed Eagle. Duncan reports that his knowledge of the mountain regions has usually enabled groups to find all five within five days, although wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed.

Burgos is the map centre and gateway to the Sierra de la Demanda, one of Duncan’s best-known and favourite areas. Routes can include mountain viewpoints around 6,000 feet and the Sad Hill Cemetery film location, where the surrounding habitat can offer Bee-eater, Hoopoe, eagles, vultures and deer.

The wider route can also produce Griffon, Egyptian, Black and Bearded Vultures, together with buzzards, kites, harriers, falcons and other characteristic Iberian birds. Depending on season, guests may also encounter Rollers, storks, reptiles, butterflies, orchids and mammals such as Wild Boar and Iberian Ibex.

Every tour is designed from a participant questionnaire rather than sold as a fixed package. Days combine birding and wildlife stops with quiet back roads, mountain landscapes, villages, local food, culture and history. Motorcycles are Duncan’s speciality, while alternative vehicle arrangements can be discussed. Accommodation is normally in small towns or villages, often in family-run hotels, with the final route, dates and quotation tailored to the group.
