This private three-day birding journey is designed around Pemba Island’s endemic birds and the habitats that support them. The route concentrates on forest, wetland, cultivated ground, forest edge and coast, with time arranged around the species still needed rather than a fixed checklist.
Much of the focused birding takes place in and around Ngezi Forest, where the itinerary searches for Pemba Green Pigeon, Pemba Sunbird and Pemba White-eye. A dedicated evening session is planned for Pemba Scops Owl. Daylight field time also reaches wetlands, farms and coastal habitat, broadening the habitat coverage while keeping the endemic focus central.
Each departure is private. The local guide can adapt the pace and emphasis to a guest’s priorities, whether that means close study of calls and behaviour, careful habitat observation, photography time or returning for a missing endemic. Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival and an evening search for Pemba Scops Owl
After arrival, begin with introductory birding in local habitat and along forest edges. The evening is dedicated to a focused search for Pemba Scops Owl.
Day 2
Ngezi Forest and Pemba’s forest endemics
Spend the day birding Ngezi Forest and nearby habitat. The principal endemic focus is Pemba Green Pigeon, Pemba Sunbird and Pemba White-eye, with additional attention to forest edge and wetland areas.
Day 3
Wetlands, farms and the coast
Use the final day in wetland, agricultural and coastal habitats. The route allows further opportunities to look for any endemic species still missing before the tour concludes.

How is the private Pemba tour priced?
The private-service elements are USD 300 per group for transport, including airport pickup, airport drop-off and itinerary transport, and USD 240 per group for two days of specialist birding guiding. Entrance fees are USD 40 per person for the two birding days. At Afro Diver, the quoted accommodation options are USD 225 per person for single full board, USD 250 per person for double half board, or USD 280 per person for double full board. Accommodation and entrance fees are charged at the stated rates; the final total is confirmed for the party size and selected accommodation.
