Seabirds and offshore wildlife on the Kona pelagic birding adventure

About this tour

Travel offshore from Kona on a dedicated birding pelagic with Mandy Talpas, an experienced captain and crew. The leeward side of Hawaii Island often allows the boat to reach productive offshore water while retaining broad views back toward the island’s volcanic slopes.

The search focuses on petrels, shearwaters, storm-petrels, tropicbirds, boobies, noddies and other seabirds, with whales and dolphins as possible incidental encounters. Local knowledge, communication with other vessels and offshore fish-aggregation devices help guide the search.

Conditions can still become moderately rough and participants need good balance and confidence moving on a boat. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
