Private Birding and Photography at Cawston Ranch
Private guided birding on a 32,000-acre ranch near Bulawayo, using woodland, river-edge, scrub, waterhole hides and night drives to explore more than 300 recorded species.
About this tour
Explore Cawston Encounters, a working wildlife ranch about 60 kilometres north of Bulawayo, with a private birding program shaped around the season and current activity. The ranch checklist exceeds 300 species, supported by habitats that range from thorn scrub and cultivated fields to river-edge forest, teak, mopane and rocky slopes.
Field time can combine guided walks with access to tree hides and sunken blinds positioned beside waterholes. A separate hide faces the ranch's vulture feeding site, creating a focused setting for watching and photographing large raptors. Night drives can also be arranged when conditions suit nocturnal birds.
A stay of three to four nights is recommended for private ranch birding, depending on the season and the time available. The current international off-peak rate starts at USD 350 per night and includes meals, drinks, laundry and the activities arranged during the stay.
Possible highlights include White-headed and Lappet-faced vultures, Bronze-winged Courser, African Golden Oriole, Pennant-winged Nightjar, Crimson-breasted Shrike, Martial Eagle and Verreaux's Eagle-Owl. These are wild birds, so sightings vary with season, weather and current conditions.
