About this tour
This southern circuit moves through Argentina and Chile from Ushuaia to the Magellan Strait, Torres del Paine and the glacier country around El Calafate and El Chaltén. Its habitats range from open Patagonian steppe and southern beech forest to wetlands, Atlantic and Pacific-influenced coasts, islands and Andean valleys.
The sample sequence includes Tierra del Fuego National Park, the Beagle Channel area, Porvenir, a boat visit to Magdalena and Marta islands, Puerto Natales, Torres del Paine and Los Glaciares National Park. Penguin colonies, cormorants, seabirds, geese, raptors and forest specialists form part of the search. Península Valdés can be considered as a separate extension, particularly during the September–November penguin season, while focused outings for Hooded Grebe or Austral Rail can also be arranged independently.
The tour is presented as a 14-day framework for November through February, with arrival in Buenos Aires shown separately as day 0. Border crossings, island boats, weather, wind and local access can affect the schedule. Itinerary
Day 0
Arrival in Buenos Aires
Arrive in Buenos Aires, meet the local transfer and stay overnight before continuing south.
Day 1
Begin the southern circuit
Use the first programme day for the transition from Buenos Aires into the Southern Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego route. The confirmed flight and starting logistics appear in the final proposal.
Day 2
Flight to Ushuaia
Fly to Ushuaia and, if arrival time allows, take an introductory birding session in the surrounding area before the overnight stay.
Day 3
Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego National Park
Work the Beagle Channel shore near Ushuaia, then search southern beech woodland and wetlands inside the nearby national park.
Day 4
Cross to Porvenir
Make the international crossing into Chilean Tierra del Fuego, using steppe, wetland and shoreline stops before reaching Porvenir.
Day 5
Porvenir to Punta Arenas
Begin with local birding, then continue north across grassland and coastal country toward Punta Arenas, watching for raptors, geese, shorebirds and other open-country species.
Day 6
Magdalena and Marta islands
Take the planned island boat excursion, where South American Sea Lions share the marine setting with Magellanic Penguins, two named cormorants—Imperial and Red-legged—and other seabirds.
Day 7
Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales
Drive north to Puerto Natales with field stops across steppe, wetlands and coastal lagoons.
Day 8
Torres del Paine
Spend a full day in Torres del Paine National Park, moving among grassland, shrubland, lakes and Andean woodland while birding beneath the park’s mountain scenery.
Day 9
Cross to El Calafate
Return to Argentina and continue to El Calafate, using travel stops for steppe birds and waterbirds.
Day 10
Perito Moreno and Los Glaciares
Visit Perito Moreno Glacier within Los Glaciares National Park and bird nearby southern beech forest and Patagonian shrubland.
Day 11
Lago Viedma and El Chaltén
Follow the scenic road beside Lago Viedma to El Chaltén, adding an afternoon session around town when time permits.
Day 12
Fitz Roy area
Explore rivers, Andean woodland and mountain habitat near Fitz Roy for Patagonian forest birds, with the day shaped by local weather and access.
Day 13
El Chaltén to El Calafate
Bird around El Chaltén in the morning, then return to El Calafate for the night.
Day 14
Return to Buenos Aires
Transfer to the airport and fly back to Buenos Aires, where the listed services conclude.
