Cairns packs freshwater, forest-edge and tidal birding into a compact area. On this private day, Doug Herrington chooses among wetlands, conservation reserves, urban parks, mangrove boardwalks and the Esplanade according to recent conditions and the birds being sought.

Pickup is available in Cairns City or the Northern Beaches, and the usual field time is 07:00 to 16:00. The route remains flexible rather than forcing every habitat into one day. A lunch stop is made where food can be purchased, or guests may bring their own.
