A day trip from Baku pairing the striped Candy Cane Mountains with the broad-leaved forests of Altiagaj National Park for mountain and woodland birds.
About this tour
This day trip travels north from Baku to two contrasting landscapes in the eastern Greater Caucasus. The first stop is the Candy Cane Mountains, where red-and-white bands of shale create the area’s distinctive striped slopes. Open rocky ground and scrub provide opportunities for birds such as Finsch’s Wheatear, Black-eared Wheatear and Chukar.
The route then continues into Altiagaj National Park, about 120 kilometers from Baku in the Khizi and Siyazan region. Broad-leaved woodland dominated by Caucasian oak, Oriental beech and European hornbeam offers a different birding environment. Possible species include Woodchat Shrike, Black-headed Bunting, Red-breasted and Semi-collared Flycatchers and Green Warbler, while raptors may also be encountered over the mountain forest.
Lunch is planned at Cennet Baghi restaurant in Altiagaj village. The return drive to Baku is scheduled for the afternoon, with arrival expected later in the day. Species activity varies by season and weather.

Day trip - Candy Cane Mountains + Altiagaj National Park
Depart Baku in the morning and begin at the Candy Cane Mountains, exploring the striped slopes and surrounding scrub for Finsch’s Wheatear, Chukar and other open-country birds. Continue to Altiagaj National Park for birding in broad-leaved mountain forest, where warblers, flycatchers, buntings and raptors are among the possibilities. Stop for lunch at Cennet Baghi restaurant in Altiagaj village. Return to Baku during the afternoon.
