African Skimmer
Rynchops flavirostris
The African Skimmer (Rynchops flavirostris) is a distinctive bird with a unique feeding behavior. It has a black cap, white underparts, and a long, slender orange bill with a lower mandible longer than the upper. This species is known for its remarkable method of foraging, flying low over water with its bill open, skimming the surface to catch small fish. African Skimmers are typically found in large rivers, lakes, and coastal lagoons across sub-Saharan Africa. They are social birds, often seen in small flocks. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss and disturbance, the African Skimmer is facing population declines in some areas.
