American Wigeon

Mareca americana

The American Wigeon is a medium-sized dabbling duck found in North America. The male has a distinctive white crown and a green patch extending from the eye to the back of the head. It also has a pinkish breast and a gray body with black and white markings. The female is mottled brown with a grayish-blue bill. American Wigeons are often found in freshwater marshes, ponds, and lakes, where they feed on aquatic plants and grasses. They are known for their whistling calls and are often seen in small flocks. These ducks are migratory and breed in the northern parts of North America. Their conservation status is of Least Concern according to the IUCN Red List.
