Barred Owl

Barred Owl, Strix varia, is an owl of North America, breeding from south-east Alaska and southern Canada through the south-eastern and south-central USA. It belongs to the Strigidae family and was described by Barton in 1799. It is associated with mature forests and can also use open woodland. The bird is marked by dark striping on the underside and is brown to grey overall. It nests in forested areas, often in a tree hollow or snag, and usually raises a small brood. It is also known as the northern barred owl, striped owl, hoot owl or eight-hooter owl.
