Lyrurus tetrix
The Black Grouse, scientifically known as Lyrurus tetrix, is a medium-sized game bird native to Europe and parts of Asia. The male Black Grouse is known for its striking black plumage with a lyre-shaped tail and a distinctive red wattle above the eye. In contrast, the female has mottled brown plumage, providing excellent camouflage in their woodland and moorland habitats. These birds are known for their elaborate courtship displays, which often take place in open areas known as leks. Black Grouse primarily feed on plant matter, including leaves, shoots, and berries. Despite their once widespread distribution, habitat loss and hunting have led to population declines in some areas.
