About this tour
This April-only outing uses the quiet hours around dawn to search rural sites near Helsinki for Black Grouse. Samuel meets guests in downtown Helsinki and drives the private group between several locations over approximately four hours. Departure is deliberately early—about 45 minutes before sunrise—because the birds’ activity and visibility are closely tied to first light. The exact meeting time therefore changes with the chosen date.
The route is not a fixed loop. Samuel uses local knowledge, recent conditions and safe viewing opportunities to decide where to stop, while keeping the focus on observing grouse without disturbance. His car carries up to four guests, and the tour combines short transfers with watching from suitable points in the surrounding countryside. A scope is available for distant views, and the pace allows time to interpret display behaviour and the wider spring landscape.
Black Grouse is the principal objective, not a guaranteed sighting. The early-April countryside can also produce arriving or staging birds such as Common Curlew, Northern Pintail, Common Crane and Greater White-fronted Goose. Weather, migration timing and daily bird activity can change the mix substantially. Guests should be ready for cold pre-dawn conditions and bring suitable layers. Do I need previous birding experience?
No. Samuel adapts the outing for experienced birders, beginners, nature lovers and families.
Are dates fixed?
No. These are private outings by request. Send preferred dates and group size through BirdWatch.info so availability can be confirmed.
What should I bring?
Bring binoculars if you have them, comfortable walking shoes, weather-appropriate layers, water, snacks and mosquito repellent when needed. Samuel can usually lend an extra pair of binoculars.
Does Samuel use playback or baiting?
No. Samuel publicly states that he does not use playback to attract birds, and the photo workshop also avoids playback and baiting.
Can photos and image order be changed?
Yes. The current photos are review selections from Samuel’s public tour pages and can be approved, reordered, replaced or removed.
