Blue-winged Teal

Spatula discors

The Blue-winged Teal is a small dabbling duck found in North and Central America. It is known for its distinctive blue-gray wing coverts and bright chestnut-colored head with a broad green patch extending from the eye to the nape. During the breeding season, the male's plumage is adorned with vibrant colors, while the female is more subtly patterned. These ducks are often found in shallow freshwater marshes, ponds, and wetlands, where they forage for seeds, aquatic plants, and invertebrates. Blue-winged Teals are migratory birds, with their breeding grounds in the northern United States and Canada, and wintering grounds in the southern United States, Mexico, and Central America.
