Middle Spotted Woodpecker

Dendrocoptes medius

The Middle Spotted Woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker found in deciduous and mixed forests of Europe and western Asia. It has distinctive black and white plumage with a red crown on the male. This species is known for its drumming behavior, using its bill to create a rapid tapping sound on trees to communicate and establish territory. Middle Spotted Woodpeckers primarily feed on insects and larvae found under bark and in wood. They are cavity nesters, often utilizing old woodpecker holes or excavating their own in dead trees. While not currently considered globally threatened, habitat loss and fragmentation are potential threats to their populations.
