The Northern Jacana, also known as the 'Jesus bird' for its ability to walk on floating vegetation, is a striking wader found in wetlands and marshes of the Americas. With its long legs, sharp bill, and distinct black and chestnut plumage, this medium-sized bird is known for its polyandrous mating system, where females court and mate with multiple males. The Northern Jacana feeds on insects, small fish, and aquatic invertebrates, using its long toes to walk on lily pads and floating vegetation. Despite facing habitat loss and degradation, this species is adaptable and can be found in a variety of wetland habitats.
