Ortolan Bunting Emberiza hortulana is a Palearctic bunting of open wooded hills, breeding from Scandinavia and Iberia east through the Baltic region, western and central Russia, northern Kazakhstan, far northern Xinjiang and Mongolia, and south from coastal Algeria and the northern Mediterranean to Turkey, the Caucasus and northern Iran. Outside the breeding season it moves to the Sahel, Eritrea, Djibouti, Ethiopia and the southern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, using upland semiarid habitats. It belongs to the family Emberizidae and was described by Linnaeus in 1758.
