Gavia stellata
The Red-throated Loon is a medium-sized diving bird known for its distinctive red throat patch during the breeding season. It has a slender, streamlined body, a dagger-like bill, and a striking black-and-white checkered back. During the non-breeding season, its plumage becomes more subdued. These birds are skilled swimmers and divers, using their webbed feet to propel themselves underwater in search of fish and crustaceans. They breed in the Arctic tundra and spend winters along coastal waters. Red-throated Loons are known for their haunting calls and can be observed in large flocks during migration.
