Sandhill Crane

Antigone canadensis

The Sandhill Crane (Antigone canadensis) is a large, long-legged bird known for its distinctive trumpeting call and graceful dancing displays. These cranes have a gray body, with a red crown on their head and a long, pointed bill. They are known for their impressive migrations, traveling long distances between breeding and wintering grounds. Sandhill Cranes are often found in wetlands, grasslands, and agricultural fields, where they forage for seeds, grains, and small invertebrates. These birds form strong pair bonds and perform elaborate courtship dances. While their populations are generally stable, habitat loss and hunting pose threats to some subspecies.
