Tawny Fish Owl

Ketupa flavipes (Hodgson, 1836)

Tawny Fish Owl, Ketupa flavipes, is an owl of the Oriental Region, from the Himalayas to south-east Asia. It was described by Hodgson in 1836 and belongs to the family Strigidae. It lives in subtropical to temperate forest, especially where mountain streams run through wooded country, and it is found in the Himalayan foothills from Kashmir and Garhwal eastwards to Laos, Vietnam and southern China. In places such as Darjeeling and Nepal it occurs at 1,500 to 2,450 m. It has large ear tufts that sit low and look untidy, yellow eyes, and feathering over most of the tarsi.
