About this tour
A birding day from Eco Lodge Itororó is available only to guests staying at the lodge for at least two nights. Within that stay, the outing can be shaped around the habitats and walking conditions you want to explore. The local excursion program ranges from lodge forest trails to wetlands and mountain birding near Nova Friburgo. A half-day normally means five to six hours in the field; full-day outings generally last nine to ten hours, with conditions affecting the timing. Andy Foster leads most trips, with other experienced English-speaking local guides helping during busy periods.
For forest birding close to the base, four lodge trails offer different distances and a mixture of easier ground and uphill sections. More than 200 bird species have been recorded in the grounds, including over 65 Atlantic Forest endemics; these are site records rather than a daily expectation. Theodoro follows an old railway alignment from around 1,100 meters and offers a comparatively gentle half-day option. Cedae reaches lower forest at about 650 meters, while the headquarters area of Três Picos lies at roughly 350 meters. Combining sites broadens the range of habitats visited.
More demanding choices reach higher elevations. The Bamboo Trail climbs gradually through native bamboo toward 1,450 meters and suits a full day, but its narrow, sometimes overgrown path is unsuitable for six or more participants. Pico da Caledônia is a strenuous mountain outing: after driving to around 1,600 meters, continue on foot toward the 2,300-meter summit. The upper route includes 620 steps, with the option to turn back rather than complete the summit section.
Other full-day possibilities include a road-based search for Three-toed Jacamar, with short walks and regular stops across a route of about 150 kilometers, or the wetlands and neighboring lowland forest at REGUA. Half-day or full-day visits can also explore Macaé de Cima and Portão Azul. Potential birds vary with the chosen habitat and season; Bare-throated Bellbird is absent from the lodge area during April–July, and Swallow-tailed Cotinga is absent from the highland outing during March–July. Journeys use air-conditioned vehicles. The outing is arranged around selected sites, rather than attempting to cover every location in one day.

How much walking is involved?
The range extends from short, easy walks during road birding to steep, lengthy climbs at Pico da Caledônia. Theodoro is a gentler trail option. Choose the route to match the group’s fitness.
Can a large group take the Bamboo Trail?
The Bamboo Trail is narrow and can be overgrown. It is unsuitable for groups of six or more; choose another excursion for a larger group.
Does one day include all the locations?
No. The excursion is built around selected sites. Some half-day trails can be combined for a full day, while routes such as Pico da Caledônia and the jacamar outing occupy a full day themselves.
