About this tour

Explore the birdlife of the Canadian Rockies on a private half-day or full-day outing with Joel Hagen of Great Divide Nature Interpretation. Routes are arranged around productive habitats near Banff or Field, the season, current conditions and the interests of each group.

From May 30 to July 15, the region offers opportunities in low-elevation forest, wetland and canyon habitats during the spring and early-summer breeding period. In July, a route may instead reach high-elevation meadows for a different set of alpine birds when access and conditions are suitable.

Joel is a skilled naturalist who has watched birds since childhood and has filled the local birding-guide role for about fifteen to twenty years. His main work is guided hiking, and he typically receives several dedicated birding requests each summer. The experience suits visitors who want a broad, realistic introduction to Rocky Mountain birds and habitats rather than a promise of a rare individual bird.

All birds are wild, so sightings cannot be guaranteed. Joel generally does not accept difficult single-species searches or wish lists centred on elusive owls, uncommon raptors or other birds that cannot be reliably produced. The standard price is CAD 459 plus 5% GST per group for a half day and CAD 639 plus 5% GST per group for a full day. Groups normally include up to six guests, although groups of seven or eight may be accepted on request.

Guests meet beside the entrance building at Cave and Basin National Historic Site in Banff, adjacent to the main parking lot, or at the main entrance of the Field Visitor Centre for Yoho outings. Transportation is not provided, so guests self-drive to the confirmed meeting place. The final route and format are confirmed after inquiry.
