Fourteen-Day Ecuador Andes and Amazon Birding Tour
Travel from the Chocó cloud forests to the Amazon and eastern Andes on a fourteen-day Ecuador birding route ending at Antisana.
About this tour
This fourteen-day Ecuador route follows a pronounced elevation and habitat gradient. From Quito it crosses the western Andes to Zuro Loma, Alambi, Las Cottingas and the Mindo–Mashpi area of the Chocó. A visit to the Paz de las Aves refuge completes the western cloud-forest section before a flight to Coca and a stay at Sacha Lodge in the Amazon.
The return overland climbs through the Quijos Valley to Cabañas San Isidro and then reaches the high Andes around Papallacta and Antisana. Hummingbird-rich gardens, antpitta sites, canopy and forest birding, Amazon waterways, temperate woodland and páramo all feature in the programme. Possible birds include Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Toucan Barbet, antpittas, mountain tanagers, Amazonian species and Andean Condor. The operator also notes possible mammal encounters. Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive in Quito
Arrive in Quito and transfer to the hotel.
Day 2
Western Andes and Chocó
Cross the western ridge for reserves around Zuro Loma, Alambi and Las Cottingas, then continue through the Mindo and Mashpi region.
Day 5
Paz de las Aves and Quito
Visit the antpitta refuge and nearby cloud forest before returning to Quito.
Day 6
Fly to Coca and enter the Amazon
Fly to Coca and transfer by river and forest access to Sacha Lodge.
Day 7
Amazon forest and waterways
Use three days for guided exploration of flooded forest, terra firme, canopy and waterways around the lodge.
Day 10
Coca to San Isidro
Return from the Amazon and travel overland to the subtropical forest of the Quijos Valley for two nights.
Day 12
Papallacta highlands
Climb through temperate forest to Papallacta and the high-Andean páramo.
Day 14
Antisana and departure
Bird Antisana National Park before the transfer to Quito airport.
